A Taste of Defeat

Danny and Dennis* are brothers. They are migrating to Canada this year. So, their mother enrolled them in English enhancement program to develop their skills, both in oral and written English.

They actually look smart, so smart that they don’t really need the program. But the problem is that they are lazy. They don’t even want to think about the answer at all. Everytime I give them something to do, they do it without even thinking whether they were doing it correctly or not. They actually didn’t mind their scores. Why would they?

So, I tried different approaches. I tried to train them to think, to use the book for reference, to revise incorrect answers, every thing I could think of so that they will take the program seriously.

At the middle of the program I smelled defeat. I couldn’t see any improvement from any of them. The younger seems to be getting better but the older.. Idon’t know.

So, I just did what I had to do. On their last day, after taking their final test, they simply took their PSP’s from their bags and casually play while waiting for their mom to fetch them. And I felt sad as I realized I really did lose. I lost the fight to PSP, iPOD and other new tech gadgets..

Ohhh sad to hear about it that all your hard work to those brothers are just go to waste. someday they will realize what they are missing. yan ang hirap sa teacher mam kimmy ano, ang teacher na ang nagsisikap instead of the student.

You are not alone in these battle, many teachers find it hard to handle such problem since the parents itself are the ones who gave those gadgets to the kids. I think parents bought these gadgets to be a baby sitter for them. I don't know, its kind of a hard world to live in now. But you did try your best and that is enough. Happy Monday!
