Mass Nouns
Mass nouns can not be directly counted. Unlike count nouns, they are made plural NOT by adding s or es, BUT by using quantifiers. Examples of such nouns are:
| Mass Noun | Quantifier | Plural form |
| advice | piece | pieces of advice |
| baggage | piece | pieces of baggage |
| butter | cube | cubes of butter |
| cheese | slice | slices of cheese |
| corn | ear | ears of corn |
| fish | school | schools of fish |
| furniture | piece | pieces of furniture |
| hair | strand | strands of hair |
| information | bit | bits of information |
| ink | bottle | bottles of ink |
| jewelry | piece | pieces of jewelry |
| oil | bottle | bottle of oil |
| soda | bottle | bottles of soda |
It is therefore grammatically incorrect to say:
My parent’s gave me advices when I was young.
(My parents gave me pieces of advice when I was young.)
Hairs were found on the floor of the ladies’ dormitory.
(Strands of hair were found on the floor of the ladies’ dormitory.)
Her mother’s jewelries look very expensive.
(Her mother’s pieces of jewelry look very expensive.)
